ICPH

Creating a modern media platform that addresses homelessness in NYC

The Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness is a New York City-based policy research organization focused on homelessness in New York and throughout the United States. They are dedicated to bringing family and child homelessness into focus through research, policy briefs, and interactive data tools. ICPH’s publications inform government officials, policymakers, advocates, academics, and service providers, and promote a robust, evidence-based dialogue on homelessness.

Following interviews with staff and an in-depth site audit, it was clear that the primary challenge for ICPH was the need to more clearly communicate the organization’s mission, and to streamline access to the deep well of resources that ICPH had generated over the years. The previous site was not search friendly, it was hard to add and manage new content making it difficult for both staff and visitors to easily find and sort through information.

To address these issues I worked with ICPH to evaluate their overall site structure and to create a series of wire frames, a content audit, and design sketches that presented an easy to understand site architecture and hierarchy. Based on their feedback, I then refined the sketches, ultimately developing a new front and back end for the website from the ground up.

I also evaluated and upgraded the use of color, typography and photography throughout the site, which led to a new visual identity. I also created guidelines for how ICPH could utilize these elements when creating new print and digital content. The refreshed graphic clarity  and purposeful organization of information allowed ICPH to directly communicate their mission, and enabled seamless access to and filtering of the important reports, infographics and research they had assembled.

The current ICPH website has been reskinned from a graphic perspective, but is built on top of the code and information architecture that we created. Again, thanks to developer Andrew Lindstrom for his major contribution to this project.
